Warts are common skin abnormalities that usually occur on the hands, feet and occasionally genitalia. They are rough, flesh colored bumps on the skin with a tiny black dot in the middle. They start small and can feel a little like a splinter trapped under the skin, but over time they usually grow larger and assume a cauliflower like appearance.
Warts are not dangerous in any way, but can cause itchiness, redness, irritation and can look unsightly.
Warts are caused by a family of viruses called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). This infection can be spread to another by sharing towels with someone with HPV or walking barefoot in an area that has been walked over by an HPV sufferer, such as the bathroom floor, shower or swimming pool.
