Coping with jealousy

What is jealousy?

Jealousy is closely related to envy. It’s a mix of inadequacy and anger that torments you when you feel that someone else has something that you want and you feel it should rightfully be yours. Jealousy can also result from the fear of losing something you already have to a rival. Most people experience feelings of jealousy at various points throughout the course of their lives. However, some people suffer with jealousy to such an extent that it negatively affects their relationships with other people and festers within, causing them a great deal of unhappiness.

People who suffer with chronic jealousy tend to be insecure and find it difficult to love other people. They can appear bad tempered, hard hearted, suspicious and aggressive.

Natural remedies

  • Natural remedies such as the Bach® Original Flower Remedy Holly can help with feelings of jealousy, envy and hatred. (Always read the label.)

  • The Alexander Technique could be beneficial in managing your emotions in a healthier way.

Other ways to help

  • Turn jealousy into admiration. It’s a healthier emotion and once you start complementing people, you’ll improve your relationships with others.

  • Learn from the person who has what you want – they could help you get it too!

  • Improve your self-image. Recovering your personal power will help you get control of your jealousy.

  • Shift your point of view so that you can step back from the story in your mind. This will give you a gap of time in which to refrain from a jealous or angry reaction and do something else.

  • Develop control over your attention so you can consciously choose the story that plays in your mind and the kind of emotions you feel.

Dealing with jealousy within a relationship

  • Give yourself a reality check - take a good look at those things that trigger your jealousy and ask yourself how realistic the threat is. Is your behavior actually making the situation worse?

  • Talk yourself up - when you start feeling the twinges of jealousy, remind yourself that your partner loves you, is committed to you and respects you. Tell yourself you're a loveable person and that nothing's going on.

  • Seek reassurance - one of the best ways to beat jealousy is to ask your partner for reassurance. Make sure you don't nag or bully them, instead share your insecurities and ask them to help you overcome the problem.
