Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone – 3.5 million of us toss and turn every night according to the British Sleep Association and women are far more likely to find it difficult to switch off. 1 Instead of suffering in silence or relying on tablets that leave you feeling groggy, Bach Original Flower Remedies can tackle the underlying emotions that are giving you restless nights.
If you can’t stop obsessing about your bank balance, reliving conversations with your boss and replaying the same old arguments in your head, White Chestnut is the remedy for you. Imagine not having to listen to the same nagging worries in stereo every night…
Switching off after a hectic day at work or with the kids can be really hard. If you’re the sort of person who takes on too much and has a really active mind, try sipping a few drops of Vervain in a glass of water to help you unwind. And for those people on the brink of exhaustion after a difficult period or an intense time at work, Olive can work wonders. It can give you the energy boost you need, even if you’re so tired you might burst into tears at any moment.
If it’s the thought of the day ahead that’s waking you up at dawn, Mimulus comes highly recommended. It can make you feel much less nervous in the build up to life’s big events like having to make a speech at a wedding or an important presentation at work.
Agrimony might well be the remedy for you if it’s only at night that your fears come to haunt you. It’s particularly recommended for people who tend to put on a brave face and hide their problems, finding they come back ten times worse in the early hours of the morning.
“I always recommend agrimony to help people get things in perspective and give them the strength to talk their problems through. The key is to work out what it is that’s troubling you,” explains Carly Harding, Bach Foundation Practitioner. “You can combine up to seven remedies and sip them through the day if there are several things keeping you awake at night.”

Top five tips for better sleep
-
Reduce the number of cups of coffee, tea or cola drinks you drink, especially later on in the day. Avoid heavy meals in the few hours before bedtime.
-
Drink alcohol in moderation. It may bring on sleepiness, but will tend cause early waking. Try to stop smoking – breathing problems are more likely in smokers.
-
Try to get into a daily routine. Go to bed at the same time every night and have a warm bath, a milky drink, or listen to soothing music before going to bed.
-
If all else fails keep a notebook next to your bed to jot down what’s worrying you.
-
Don’t worry about how much you’re sleeping – this only makes things worse.
