Women unknowingly risk their health with low iron diets

The National Diet and Nutrition Survey, conducted by YouGov for industry body MeatMatters*, has revealed that one in four women suffer from a low intake of iron.

It seems many health conscious women who favour chicken and fish, over red meat, as they are seen as healthier are putting their health and their future children’s health at risk. British women are simply unaware of the importance of iron. Switching a couple of meals a week to foods high in iron, such as steak, liver and watercress could make all the difference. Low iron levels can result in a number of side effects including fatigue, general lack of energy and decreased ability to concentrate.

Iron is an essential mineral, playing a pivotal role in the human body by facilitating the transportation of oxygen, energy release and promoting the functioning of the body’s immune system.

If you struggle to get sufficient iron levels from your diet alone, which is not uncommon especially as iron nutrition presents a real challenge as iron is one of the most difficult nutrients to absorb, then a natural liquid iron supplement may be beneficial. Spatone Apple is a natural liquid iron supplement with added Vitamin C which aids the iron absorption. Its great tasting, no need to mix, apple flavour means you can carry it with you ready to take a shot when you need it. The iron naturally present in Spatone has been shown to be easily absorbed, with up to 40% bioavailability [i] , compared to 5- 22% from food and other iron supplements. This means that it can be chosen as a valuable complement to a varied and well balanced diet to help ensure dietary iron intake.

# It is important to follow a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute.
