New study shows how scared kids are of school

Starting school is more emotional for kids than we realised, but Bach can take the edge off

Recent research[1] looked at children starting in reception classes and found that they showed signs of stress and anxiety three to six months before term even started. It is certainly a nerve-racking time for parents, worried about their children being away from them for the first time, but now there is proof that children also feel the strain, possibly even picking it up from their parents. Bach™ Original Flower Remedies could help deal with the preparation of starting school and those difficult first day emotions.

The research, conducted by the Economic and Social Research Council, tested children in Bath for the stress hormone cortisol six months before they started school, two weeks after they started and six months later. The cortisol levels at the beginning of the study were taken to represent baseline levels, but the researchers were surprised to find that they were already much higher than expected. Dr Turner-Cobb, who led the research, believes that parents may need to be more aware of how their child is feeling regarding big events such as starting school and support them more to reduce their anxiety.

Bach Original Flower Remedies are natural, safe for children and can effectively help deal with emotional events and issues, here are a few that might help:

For kids

  • Walnut - To help your child adjust to the change of environment and to stop them being influenced by the behaviour of new friends

  • Mimulus – If your child is worried about starting a new school

  • Larch – They may need an extra hand to make new friends, if your child is not confident generally or can be shy

And for mums and dads

  • Red Chestnut – if you tend to feel anxious about your child when they are at school, Red Chestnut can help you to relax and lift the worrying feelings.

Bach Original Flower Remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s. The 38 individual Bach Original Flower Remedies are a simple, safe and effective way to help promote emotional well-being. Dr Bach went on to develop the world famous Rescue™ Remedy which is a combination of five of the Bach Original Flower essences and can help with everyday stressful situations.
