New research shows Bach Flower Remedies can help relieve pain

Nearly one in two pain sufferers report an improvement after using flower remedies

A newly published research review in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice[1] adds further weight to the theory that emotional states and physical health are intrinsically linked by demonstrating that Bach flower remedies, which help balance people’s emotions, can be effective in aiding pain relief[2].

An analysis of 384 case studies was carried out, where participants have used Bach flower remedies to treat a wide range of issues – both emotional and physical including headaches, heartburn and neck or shoulder pain. Of the 41 people whose primary concern was pain, 88% felt an improvement in their emotional outlook and 46% felt an improvement in their physical pain. In conclusion, Judy Howard, the paper’s author, found that Bach flower remedies “clearly do have a valid and potential important role to play in the psychological perspective of pain management”.

Many people find emotional support from the Bach™ Original Flower Remedies. Developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930s, the 38 individual Bach Original Flower Remedies are a simple, safe and effective medicine to help promote emotional well-being.

Patricia Campbell-Parker, registered Bach practitioner, commented: “Many experts agree that a healthy mind is essential for maintaining a healthy body, which means that it is vital for people to learn how to keep their emotions in balance. If we are to lead fulfilling lives, we need to understand our emotions and learn how to effectively manage them in a positive way – our minds and bodies will both thank us for it.”

Bach Original Flower Remedies retail at £5.95 for 20ml and are available from Holland & Barrett, Boots and most independent chemist and health food stores.

  3. There has been much work conducted to prove the importance of positive emotional health for physical well-being. Peter Salovey’s paper, published in American Psychologist, brings together the beliefs of Hippocrates all the way through to modern thinkers on the subject and found that emotional states and physical health are intrinsically linked[3].

When people are feeling stress, there are several ways it is manifested physically from heart attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure, skin flare-ups and headaches. In the same way, depression can have a detrimental effect on the immune system – “Positive moods would appear to enhance immune system responding, but it is compromised by negative moods[4].”
