The Bowen Technique

What is the Bowen Technique?
The Bowen technique is a gentle, relaxing therapy in which the therapist applies a series of light movements with their thumbs or fingers over different parts of the body. It can be done directly on the skin or through light clothing. The client normally lies down on a treatment table or sits in a chair. During a treatment, the therapist will stop frequently between moves and leave the room, to allow the body to become deeply relaxed and to benefit from the previous set of moves. The moves are very light and subtle, involving no hard or continuous pressure.

How does it work?
By focusing on problem areas deep within the body, the therapist can work on the area where tension has built up and then work on it to release it. The body then benefits from this deep level of relaxation on the system.

What ailments can it help?
It can benefit people of all ages, especially people who are in pain. It treats the body as a whole, trying to work on helping the person. Although this is the idea behind the Bowen technique, it can help remove certain conditions such as:

  • sports injuries
  • back pain
  • everyday stresses
  • women’s health
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • aches & pains
  • digestive problems
  • headaches
