Spatone, 100% natural iron food supplement is ideally taken in the morning on an empty stomach diluted in orange juice. Please allow 30 - 45min before having coffee or tea, or eating breakfast.
You can also take Spatone between meals or as the last thing at night before going to sleep.
Spatone Apple is pre-mixed in an apple concentrate so it's ready to be consumed without being mixed in a fruit juice.
What if I can’t tolerate orange juice?
Other juices that would be suitable to be mixed with Spatone, 100% natural iron supplement are: apple, mango, pineapple, but not grape juice. Spatone can also be diluted in water.
How much Spatone can I take during pregnancy?
During the first trimester and post natal, one sachet can provide the average extra absorbed iron requirement of 2mg/d. During the second and third trimesters a mean iron absorption of 4 mg/d is required. This may be provided by taking two sachets of Spatone which should help prevent the development of iron deficiency.
If pregnant or breastfeeding please consult your doctor or health care professional before taking any food supplements or medicines.
Are there any side effects with Spatone?
Users during clinical trials reported no adverse reactions when taking Spatone on an empty stomach. Spatone therefore provides an effective alternative to standard ferrous sulphate tablets without the unpleasant side effects reported by many people.
Oral iron therapy is associated with side effects which include gastrointestinal irritation and pain and sometimes nausea and vomiting. These side effects are related to the amount of iron taken and are very unlikely to occur with Spatone when taken as recommended.
Which precautions do I need to take?
Iron supplements can sometimes cause stomach upsets and constipation. Although while taking Spatone this is unlikely, should problems occur tell your healthcare professional (e.g. doctor, pharmacist or midwife).
They may suggest you try a combination of the following steps: dilute Spatone in water or fruit juice or take in smaller amounts throughout the day e.g. half sachet at a time at intervals throughout the day between meals diluted with a large amount of water or fruit juice.
Who shouldn’t take Spatone?
People who know they have genetic haemochromatosis or carry the haemochromatosis gene should not take iron supplements including Spatone. Haemochromatosis is an inherited condition in which the accumulation of iron in the body can eventually lead to tissue damage resulting in cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes. It is a treatable condition and genetic testing is available.
Can children take Spatone?
Children over the age of two can safely take Spatone.
Can I overdose on Spatone?
Studies indicate that people with high iron stores will absorb little iron from Spatone. Spatone is thus a safe and effective iron food supplement which provides highly bioavailable iron for those requiring it, but should not cause iron overload in those with adequate iron stores.
In order to cause acute iron toxicity in young children it is probable that the contents of over 50 sachets would need to be drunk at once. Poisoning from excessive consumption is therefore unlikely.
How much iron does the human body need?
The body's daily need for iron is about 2mg for women and 1-1.5mg for children and men.
However, the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for iron intake is approximately 14mg. This is because the RDA is based on the relatively poor iron absorption from foods. Typically only 5-20% of the iron in foods is actually absorbed.
Is Spatone suitable for diabetics?
Spatone is a 100% natural spa water with a high content of elemental iron. It therefore has no added ingredients such as sugars or glucose. It is unlikely that Spatone will interact with your diabetic medication. Do check with your doctor if you have any concerns regarding your energy levels or symptoms related to iron deficiency.
