Teething usually begins between the ages of four and nine months and most babies will cut their first tooth by one year.
In total there are twenty primary teeth (twelve less than in adults) and most children have all their primary teeth by the time they are three years old. By the age of six, primary teeth start falling out and secondary teeth begin pushing through the gums.
Order of teeth breaking through:
Generally your baby's bottom two front teeth are the first ones to come through followed by the top two front teeth. The top and bottom teeth either side of the front teeth (incisors) come through next. The back teeth (first molars) come through at around 12 -14 months, followed by the sharp pointy canines at 16-18 months. The second molars (found in the back of the mouth on the top and bottom) are the last teeth to cut through the gums and are usually fully in place by your child’s third birthday. By this age you child has finally developed a full set of primary teeth which stay in place until replaced by secondary teeth at the age of six.
Don’t worry if your baby's teeth don’t come out perfectly straight since teeth straighten up automatically over time.
Is your baby teething? Here is our check-list:
Run a clean finger over the gum, can you feel the tooth or can you see it?
Does your baby have sore and tender gums, flushed cheeks or general inflammation in the mouth?
Any dribbling or excessive chewing?
Our teething tips:
Give your baby something to chew on: a clean teething ring or a toy that has been sterilized and chilled in the fridge can be soothing.
Try offering your baby a cold bottle of water or diluted juice. This can also help replenish your baby's fluid levels when dribbling is excessive.
If the constant dribbling is causing sore skin, redness or a rash, try to keep the area dry and apply a barrier cream to protect and soothe the skin.
It may help to massage the gums with a clean, cool finger.
