Characterised by a low-level sebum production (the oil our skin naturally produces), dry skin is prone to sensitivity. People with dry skin often experience a tight sensation after their face comes into contact with water, e.g. during cleansing. Dry skin can have a dull look and is prone to fine lines and wrinkles due to its inability to retain moisture.
Luckily dry skin is often a seasonal occurrence caused by changes in temperatures or humidity levels or the lengthy exposure to strong wind or sun without sufficient UV protection. Central heating and air conditioning are well known to reduce humidity in a room and hence can cause or contribute to dry skin. Lack of Vitamins, in particularly Vitamin A and B are said to cause dry skin too. Frequent cleansing (especially when harsh skin care products are used) further increases the symptoms of dry skin.
People who swim more than twice a week are prone to experience dry skin due to the chlorine used in swimming pools. Interestingly, sun damaged skin can also mimic the appearance of dry skin.
If you suffer from dry skin and you have experienced skin irritations in the past it may be advisable to avoid skincare products containing salicylic acid or peroxide in order to prevent flaking, peeling, chapped or reddened skin.
Did you know? Occasional blemishes are often referred to as ‘PMS blemishes’ due to an increased release of the male hormone androgen pre menstruation. Androgen is known to alter the skin’s pH which causes an increase in sebum production and hence can cause blemishes when pores become blocked.
Note: Please be aware that some skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis or seborrhoea start out looking and feeling like extremely dry skin.
