Is it Colic?

Colic is a medical term for excessive and frequent crying in a baby who appears to be otherwise healthy and well fed. It usually begins within the first few weeks of life, but often stops by the time the baby is four months old and by six months at the latest.

For the one in five parents whose baby has colic*, this can be an overwhelming time. To help relieve the symptoms of colic, we have launched Nelsons® Colica® Colic Granules, a homeopathic medicinal product used within the homeopathic tradition for the symptomatic relief of colic in babies over one month of age.

What is colic and what are some of the signs of colic?

  • Crying Baby
    Crying
Colic is the medical term used to describe excessive, frequent crying in babies who otherwise appear to be healthy and well fed. A common way of characterising colic is the 'rule of three'. This defines colic as ‘crying for at least three hours a day, at least three days a week, and for at least three weeks’ duration’.

Please note If you have any doubts that your baby has colic, contact your doctor when the symptoms first begin. Consult a doctor or qualified healthcare practitioner if the symptoms worsen, or persist for more than 2 days or if side effects occur.

  • Distressed Baby
    Baby appears in distress
One sign of colic is when a baby might appear to be in distress for no apparent reason and the usual methods of comforting may not work very well.  But remember a baby with colic will have spells when they are perfectly fine in between bouts of colic symptoms.

  • Baby with knees up
Drawing of knees up to the chest
Another sign of colic is if your baby pulls his knees up to his chest and arches his back when crying.

  • crying baby
    Face can become flushed
A third sign of colic is that those babies with colic will cry inconsolably more often and for longer than other babies which often leads to them having a flushed face.

  • Baby fist
    Clenching of fists
Another sign of a baby with colic is that he or she could also grow rigid during a crying fit and clench their fists and curl their toes.
