Nelsons CPD Courses

We are pleased to be able to let you know that our courses have now been approved by the 3 organizations we applied to: Association of Reflexology, Complementary Therapists Association and Federation of Holistic Therapists.

Each of our courses is now worth 5 credits/ CPD points. As a gentle reminder, please see below a description of each CPD course:

Science of the emotions
This course provides a fascinating look at how the nervous system and the endocrine system interact in order to produce an emotional response, the controls that the body places over emotional responses (and how, what and when these controls are altered – including a close look at the stress response). Food and other chemicals which can enhance, suppress or alter emotional responses are also discussed with a view to explaining why other health professionals occasionally make suggestions about altering diet or lifestyle to support a return to emotional health. Trevor Gorard, the trainer, has been lauded by his previous students for his ability to turn otherwise dry academic material into relevant, interesting, and fun learning experiences. He has assured us (and we can see this from the material he’s sent in) that this is not a standard anatomy & physiology class, nor do you need to have qualifications in anatomy & physiology to attend the course (or any of the other ‘sciencey’ CPD courses we are offering).

Allergic to life
The focus of this course is to provide a simple, working understanding of the immune system and the ways in which it can become overactive, developing sensitivities to foods, chemicals or the environment around you. Whilst stress is a key factor in encouraging the development of immune-related conditions, delegates can expect to come away with an understanding of some of the ways that these conditions have been treated successfully with complementary therapies, manageable food or lifestyle changes. Physical conditions which will be referred to include hay fever (as well as similar allergic responses), anaphylactic shock, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, ME/Chronic fatigue and Asthma/Eczema.

Sleep disorders
This session will provide concise information about the most common sleep disorders, the way they are traditionally diagnosed and treated as well as effective support available within the complementary therapies. Where relevant, food and lifestyle changes which are helpful are also discussed in some detail as are the common causes of sleep disorders such as grinding teeth, sleep apnoea, the various types of insomnia, snoring, hypersomnia and many more.

Counselling skills
This session is designed to help you get the most out of the consultation process and to maintain your professional boundaries in a positive way. As part of the session, you can expect to meet and practice techniques to help improve and enhance listening skills beyond those covered at Level 3. Particular attention is paid to the supportive techniques you can use for negotiating with difficult clients or where difficult situations/stories present themselves and to providing effective advice and guidance on dealing with clients in deep personal crisis – in particular during bereavement.

Planning and marketing your therapeutic business
Whilst the credit crunch has meant people are spending less on non-essential items, the word on the street is that those complementary therapists who are both effective and have got their marketing right are busier than ever. Their feedback has been that the clients they are seeing have taken the decision to have regular sessions because they need to be emotionally and physically in peak condition to cope effectively with what is going on around them at this time. If you suspect that your own marketing could do with a bit of a face lift, this is the course for you. Whilst basic marketing and planning techniques will be covered, the course will be adapted to suit the needs and interests of participants, so it will be relevant to those just starting in business and those who want to revisit their marketing and attract new groups of clients. Initially the course will be taught by Nicola Jenkins, who is also the author of Business Practice for Therapists, published by Hodder Arnold.
