Britain is a nation of stress heads with 99% of people admitting to feeling stressed out at some point every day.* Unsurprisingly, money worries are the leading cause of stress, with children, workload and relationship issues also topping the poll. One in four people surveyed said that they feel stressed for up to 30 minutes of everyday – which means losing one week a year to life’s torments.
The research conducted to celebrate RESCUE Remedy’s® 80th birthday found that, while we are all feeling the strain, the pressure of modern life has a range of different effects on people:
-
80% of respondents said that being stressed made them short-tempered
-
43% said it made them gain weight
-
42% said it affected their relationships
-
22% said it drove them to drink more alcohol
Other lifestyle areas suffering due to the effects of daily stresses include career performance, looks and even the love lives of British women, with one quarter admitting they feel too stressed out for sex.
“Most people now admit to feeling stressed everyday but overall stress levels aren't necessarily any higher than they were 80 years ago. What has changed is the type of stress” comments Health and Wellbeing Consultant Liz Tucker. “80 years ago, with fewer life choices you were willing to accept your lot, which in many cases wasn't a lot. You had much less control about where you lived, what you earned, what you did for a living and how many children you had but people were generally more accepting and had lower aspirations or ambitions.
"Over the years we have gained more freedom, wealth and equality so today in theory, we can ‘have it all’ and now. Unfortunately the down side is we are personally responsible for our own destiny and under pressure to make the right choice from a wide range of imperfect and difficult options. 80 years ago you either worked or looked after the home, now we do everything all at once, leaving little time to rest. 80 years ago stress was more likely to stem from one big problem whilst today, it’s spread across many smaller issues.”
According to Liz Tucker, in 2010 stress levels appear so much greater than 80 years ago, but maybe because people are more open about how they are feeling. 80 years ago there was a stigma attached to those who admitted to feeling stressed and many people just suffered in silence. Today individuals are much more aware of the negative impact that feeling stressed can have and are knowledgeable about the benefits of dealing with their problems at an early stage.
