Energy levels

Our energy levels can go up and down regularly, and therefore have a big effect on our lives. Lack of energy can be caused by a continued period of strain from personal problems, such as career issues, family commitments and finances, and the general pressure of everyday life taking its toll. If the strain is prolonged, the mind and body do not function as well and people can find they need to take a lot of rest, which may give them little relief.

Causes for the lack of energy

Lack of energy can be attributed to physiological causes such as:

Emotional symptoms such as:

How to boost your energy

  • Low iron levels are often associated with fatigue. Boost your energy levels a natural iron supplement.

  • Bach Original Flower Remedies such as Olive can be useful in helping with weariness and exhaustion. Rescue Remedy, a unique blend of five Bach flower essences can be beneficial in dealing with emotional imbalances associated with daily stressful situations. (Always read the label.)

  • Aromatherapy oils such as Benzoin and Lavender can be useful to help if your lack of energy is because of emotional exhaustion. Eucalyptus and Juniper oils are good for coping with emotional and nervous energy depletion.

  • Mediation - the mind has a strong influence on the health of the body so meditation can be really good for you.

  • Body balance work, such as yoga and shiatsu, can really help the your body and mind become in tune so that you can get a better quality of sleep and awake refreshed, full of energy.

  • Light therapy - during the winter when there is less sunlight, serotonin levels can drop, making us feel tired and prone to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Try spending more time outside or try using special lights that simulate natural daylight. Studies have found they are very effective.

Other ways to help

  • Reduce stress. For helpful information and advice on dealing with stress, visit our Rescue site.

  • Have some leisure time. It is important to have some free time to relax and do whatever you like, free from the pressures of everyday life. Do something you enjoy, whether it’s reading magazines, listening to a relaxation tape or taking a bath.

  • Create a bedtime ritual. Try going to bed and getting up at the same time each day and night.Whether you are an early bird or a night, try to use the time that you function the best to get things done.

  • Get enough sleep. This is the time when the body repairs and recharges itself for the following day, so make sure that you get enough rest.

  • Exercise. Although after working out, you will feel tired, in the long-run the endorphins that are released make us feel awake, alive and full of energy.

  • Reduce caffeine. Caffeine can cause difficulty with sleeping well. Try to get down to just one cup a day in the morning. Start by cutting out caffeine after six pm.

  • Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol interferes with sleep, so limit yourself to just one or two if you are exhausted.

  • Eat a balanced diet - as every extra pound that you carry is one pound of tissue that is putting a strain on your body. Eat a diet rich in five servings of fruit and vegetables, plenty of starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice, some protein rich foods like meat, fish, lentils, and some dairy foods.

*A food supplement must not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
