Coughs

What is a cough?

Coughing is a reflex action started by stimulation of sensory nerves in the respiratory passages. When you cough, you intake a short sharp breath and the voice box closes for a split second. The abdominal and chest muscles you use for breathing then contract and increase the pressure you need to drive the air out of your lungs when your voice box re-opens. Finally, a blast of air comes out at high speed, clearing the airway of dust, dirt or excessive discharge.

The cough reflex is a vital part of the body's defense mechanisms. Normally, the lungs and the lower respiratory passages are sterile. If dust or dirt gets into the lungs, they could become a breeding ground for bacteria and cause infection.

Common causes

  • Dust, germs and fumes (such as smoking, car exhaust fumes)
  • Viral infections (such as flu or the common cold)
  • Allergy (such as hayfever)
  • Respiratory diseases such as asthma

Symptoms

A common cough can be dry and irritating or productive and phlegmy, depending on the type of infection. Symptoms could last from between a couple of days up until a couple of weeks.

However, chronic coughing can be a symptom of a more serious problem. People who experience chesty coughs that last for more than two weeks should consult a doctor.

Natural remedies

  • Homeopathy, such as the homeopathic remedy Bryonia, has traditionally been used to help bring natural relief to coughs.∏
  • Aromatherapy oils such as essential oil of juniper may be used with hot water as an inhalant.
  • Reflexology - Rub the padded area below your big toe when you get a cough. Hold back the toes and press on the raised area with your thumb. This may help relieve chest congestion.

Other ways to help

  • If your child is suffering from coughs make sure he or she drinks plenty of fluids and keep the air moist in their bedroom.
  • Put damp towels on the radiator or buy a humidifier from a chemist. This will make breathing easier and ‎is excellent for coughs.
  • Elevate the head of their bed. This will allow their sinuses and nasal passages to drain better.
  • A warm, steamy bath can help tickly coughs. Remember to never leave your child alone in the bath.

Medical referral is advisable if symptoms worsen or persist.
