Falls represent a serious problem for older people; they occur in around 30% of over 65s and 50% of those aged over 80 every year, often resulting in serious consequences, both physically and psychologically[i]
. In addition to bruising a fall can dent confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence.
From the 18th-22nd June this year Age UK is hosting a Falls Awareness Week, to help promote the services and interventions that can help older people to reduce their risk of falls. Bruising caused by falls can bring discomfort, as well as being unsightly, but fortunately Nelsons Arnicare Arnica Cream
can help provide relief.
Nelsons Arnicare Cream is a natural first aid treatment for bumps and bruises caused by a knock or fall. A study published in The Pharmaceutical Journal[ii] shows that applied topically, arnica helps the healing process of bruises, a recognised first aid remedy and has been traditionally used since the 16th century for the treatment of bruises and muscle aches.
There are many practical ways to help prevent falls such as improving balance and strength through exercise, ensuring your home is safe from hazards, that feet are kept in good health and eyesight is checked regularly. However, if you do take a tumble and suffer from bruising here are some tips from Arnicare:
Keep yourself calm and try not to panic
If possible raise the bruised area and support it in a comfortable position
Apply something cold to the bruised area, such as a bag of peas wrapped in a tea towel
Apply Nelsons Arnicare Arnica Cream to the affected area
