This year, more than ever, people are trying to stay fit and healthy throughout the winter months and ward off unwanted viruses.
Iron is an essential part of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. The mineral is also found in myoglobin, which supplies oxygen to the muscles and is part of many enzymes and immune-system compounds, which means that iron is involved in promoting the functioning of the body’s immune system as well as many other of the body’s vital processes.
Good dietary sources of iron can be found in foods such as red meat, fruits such as watermelon and vegetables such as spinach. However, a recent government survey found that 91% of women in the UK aged between 19 and 64 years are consuming less than the RDA of iron. If you are not getting the RDA of iron and your levels are low as a result, it can cause fatigue and low energy levels. Low iron levels can also eventually lead to a lowered immune system.
Some people have difficulty in absorbing the iron from supplements in tablet form and can suffer from unwanted side effects, such as constipation or headaches. Spatone is a unique natural iron containing spa water found in the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia National Park - which is easily absorbed by the body, so can help top up your iron levels gently and effectively, without causing some of the usual side effects associated with conventional iron supplements.
If you think you might be iron deficient book yourself in for a blood test with your GP.
Spatone is available from Boots, Holland & Barrett, Lloyds Pharmacies and independent health food stores and pharmacies, price £6.95 for 28 sachets (4 weeks supply). For mail order call 01492 640 057 or go to www.spatone.com

The study from Penn State[i] looked at 72 healthy and well-nourished women. Blood tests discovered that some of the women were iron deficient and others iron sufficient, then the samples were examined in several immune response tests. One test looked at the white cell count, otherwise known as T-cells, which are able to multiply and fight infection. It was discovered that the white cells in the iron deficient blood samples were only multiplying at half the rate of the white cells in the iron sufficient blood samples, which means that immune levels were literally halved due to iron deficiency.
